The Weekend: October 8-11

Honk Festival 2009 by tshirtfiend from Flickr

With a long weekend upon us, there’s no time like the present to carve our a day or two to wander around Boston.  This weekend, my picks will have you rockin’ out with a great local band, rubbing elbows with fellow foodies, marching to the beat of a honk’n drum, and soaking up a ‘lil culture.  Sadly (or not so sadly), I’ll be on holiday in California wine country, which means that you’ll have to go out and enjoy these fab events for me!

Friday, October 8
BearFight Rocks Out at the Lansdowne
One of my favorite local bands, BearFight, is roaring back into Boston this weekend for two rockin’ shows – Friday night at the Lansdowne and Saturday at Grand Canal. The Lansdowne is my personal favorite BearFight venue because of the energetic crowd and fantastic beer selection. With Bear-covers by The Killers, Oasis, MGMT, Franz Ferdinand, the Dropkick Murphy’s, and more, arrive ready for a night of dancing and singing along.  The Lansdowne is located at 9 Lansdowne Street next to Fenway Park. The band will start playing by 10:00 p.m., and the show is 21+.

Citizen Chef’s Meet Boston’s Best at the Museum of Science, Boston
On Saturday, October 9 at 10:00 a.m., join several of Boston’s best chefs, including Jody Adams (Rialto), Tiffani Faison (Rocca), Ana Sortun (Oleana), and more, for at-home cooking tips and a healthy cooking demo on the Museum’s outdoor pavilion. Part of an ongoing series about food, culture, health and the environment called Let’s Talk About Food, this event makes me wish that I was in town this weekend to pop by. Passes to the event are free starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning and seating is limited, hinting that the early bird truly does get the worm (er, delicious samples)!

Sunday, October 10

32nd Annual Harvard Square Oktoberfest and HONK! Parade
In an effort to, “Reclaim the streets for horns, bikes and feet,” the roads between Davis and Harvard Square will be filled with the sounds of sweet music on Sunday, October 10.  From noon to 1:00 p.m., a parade of marching bands will play lively  music while traveling from Davis to Harvard Square along Elm Street, Beech Street and Massachusetts Ave. As the hub of the festival, Harvard Square will feature six stages of entertainment, more than 50 international food vendors and several beer gardens (of course)! The festival runs from noon to 5:00 p.m.

The Fall Open House at The Museum of Fine Arts
In celebration of the Columbus Day holiday, the Museum of Fine Arts is opening its doors to the public on Monday from 10:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. with an open house dedicated to art and design. Dubbed “An Exploration of Fantasy, Reality and Style,” the activities include live dance performances, family arts and crafts and my personal favorite – fashion-themed exhibitions.
