The Weekend: October 23-24

Time for another fabulous Boston weekend. With November nipping at our heels and the cold weather not too far behind, I’m making it my mission to be outside as much as possible before phrases like “snow,” “wind chill,” and “below zero” become the norm. As a result? This weekend I’m embracing outdoor events that I can also walk to.

Here are my top picks for the weekend in Boston. Walking to them is completely optional:

Saturday, October 23 & Sunday, October 24 – Head of the Charles Regatta
A truly Boston tradition, this weekend marks the 46th Head of the Charles Regatta. Described as the “world’s largest two-day rowing event,” more than 8,000 both experienced and novice rowers from around the world will compete in 55 different race events. Adding to the grand scale of the event will be the nearly 300,000 expected spectators that will to line up along the iconic Charles River over the next to days to cheer them on.

For those attending the event this weekend, I recommend taking a walk along the Charles River between Central and Harvard Square in Cambridge. The races takes place between the Boston University DeWolfe Boathouse and the Artesani Playground in Brighton, if you’re feeling extra ambitious. In addition to offering a great visual of the races, there will be tons of food vendors and assorted freebies. For an interesting, behind the scenes look at the race that’s highly useful for those that do not know much about the sport of rowing, check out the Head of the Charles Regatta blog!

Sunday, October 24 – SoWa Open Market
Yet another sign of the impending doom (I mean cold weather) that will blanket Boston before we know it, the fabulous (and outdoor) SoWa Open Market is down to its final two events of the season! Boo hoo! Described by the New York Times as, “Boston’s version of Portobello Market,” this unique South End market is filled with local vendors selling handmade wares, clothing, food, and more. Personally, my roommate and I love the SoWa Vintage market, featuring vintage and antique art, clothing and furniture in a cool indoor space adjacent to the market. Luckily for us, the SoWa Vintage Market blog confirms that they will remain open into November! Makes the end of the Open Market slightly easier to accept.

The SoWa Open Market and SoWa Vintage Market are located at 460 Harrison Ave. in the South End. The markets are both offer nearby free parking for visitors. Just follow the signs posted outside of the market!
