Memorial Day Weekend: Strolls, Shopping & Cooking

IMG_2726I’m currently in the middle of what’s inarguably the busiest time in my life. So much to do and so little time, but it’s all for a very good reason (more on that in the coming weeks!). So, while many flee the city for Memorial Day Weekend, I hunkered down at home to work on my latest project. But, as the old adage goes – all work and no play makes The SavvyBostonian a dull girl, so I did enjoy a few simple delights over the weekend. From strolls, to a bit of shopping and cooking, here are a few highlights from a relaxed Memorial Day Weekend.

If you happened to be in Boston over Memorial Day weekend, you might remember that the weather was terrible. Let’s say that again for emphasis – terrible! Such a disappointment. From overcast, to rainy and windy, I tried my best to enjoy a walk around the Charles River on Sunday and it was kind of a joke. Rarely empty on the weekends, the wind was so strong that taking walk was a challenge at best. Ever intrepid, I persevered and ended up with this pretty decent snapshot.

On the Friday leading into Memorial Day weekend, the team at Intimacy in the Copley Place mall (1st floor, adjacent to Barneys – how convenient) was kind enough to invite me in for a visit and summer preview. I’ll be writing more on it later, but if you are looking for lacy underthings, or a nice swimsuit for the summer season, do consider paying them a visit.

It also wouldn’t be a weekend for me without lots of cooking. I’m too busy to cook during the work week, so I really look forward to cooking over the weekend. This weekend included a simple favorite of a veggie burger served on a bed of peas and edamame coated in a splash of extra virgin olive oil, grated parmesan (favorite = Whole Foods 365 already grated) and black pepper with an over easy egg on top. So simple and done in a few minutes, you could also make this with a regular burger.

I also made what are quite possibly the best vegan fig bars ever from Choosing Raw. I’ve said it before, but you don’t need to be vegan to enjoy vegan recipes. The bars taste like a vegan fig newton and are scrumptious. The “jam” that you make to fill the bars would also be incredible on a canape, or as part of a cheese plate. Unfortunately, the photo doesn’t do the bars much justice, so you’ll have to take my word for it.

It also wouldn’t be Memorial Day weekend without some grilling. Unfortunately, my city apartment lacks outdoor space, so I made the most of my grill pan. The photo below is of sirloin filets with a nice garlic, cumin, salt and pepper rub and brushed with a little olive oil-butter mix before seasoning and grilling. Yum yum yum.

Oh, and what better way to end a long weekend than with one sunny, hot day? I finally got in a pleasant long walk in the Back Bay. Though it’s not ideal to have the weather improve just in time for the work week, better late than never, right?
